The team is a member of the NHL’s Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. Their homebase is in Toronto, Ontario located in eastern Canada and their home games are held in the ScotiaBank Arena.

History of the Maple Leafs

Founded in 1917, the Maple Leafs first went by the Toronto Arenas. In 1919 the name was switched to the Toronto St. Patricks, and finally was renamed to the Maple Leafs in 1927 when the club was purchased by a new owner. The NHL started out with only 6 professional teams, and the Maple Leafs served as one of these original 6.

Well-Known Dynasties of the Maple Leafs

There have been two periods throughout Maple Leaf history that have been deemed the most successful years for the team. From 1947 to 1951 was the first “Maple Leaf Dynasty” and the second was 1962 to 1967. These years have been dubbed unforgetable dynasties in the the hockey powerhouse.

Championships Won Throughout History

Over the years the Maple Leafs have won 13 Stanley Cup championships. The most Stanley Cup wins is held by another Canadian team - the Montreal Canadiens - with 24 titles. During the Maple Leaf Dynasty years we mentioned above, the team acquired most of these championships. They have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, so they are definitely due for a win in the upcoming years.

Since 1917 there are has been 13 retired player numbers that can no longer be used by the new players. These 13 numbers belonged to players who made a major difference in the Maple Leaf gameplay; it would be wrong to allow just anyone to wear the jersey of one of the greats.
