The multiplayer battle arena game called League of Legends - LoL for short - is one of the most widely popular online video games in the world. It was developed by the Riot Games company in 2009; it has been popular since its unveiling into the gaming world and it currently boasts an impressive 100 million active users each month.

Does it Cost Money to Play LoL?

LoL uses a “freemium” model; this means that although it is technically free to play, there is also a more premium version for more advanced gamers. If you want to play the basic version you can do so free of charge, but if you want to experience the more advanced features of the game you’ll have to pay. And once you get hooked on LoL, you’ll definitely be willing to pay.

The payment options work by accepting micro transactions from players. First you’ll have to go to the Riot Games app or website and use real money to purchase something called “Riot Points.” These points are then transferrable to the game itself and will be used instead of real cash when you want to pay for something within the LoL gaming portal.

The Inspiration Behind LoL

LoL was inspired by a famously popular game called World of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. More specifically the game was inspired by one particular aspect of Warcraft III… a module within the game called Defense of the Ancients.

The creator of Defense of the Ancients, Steve Feak, partnered with the two developers of LoL, Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill. Together the team created the setting, plot, and gaming aspects of LoL utilizing similar aspects that can be found in Defense of the Ancients. The game was officially released on October 27th, 2009 but went through about a year of beta testing beforehand.

The Overall Plot of LoL

Just like most video games, LoL is set in an alternate reality that features a collection of characters ranging from heroes to villains. The main player acts as a “summoner” and leads the champion to battle using specific skills and powers. Most of the struggles that are encountered throughout the game have to do with political struggles between countries of the continent Valoran.

The main way for the champion to win the battle is by destroying the “nexus” of the enemy; the nexus is a source of power that is found within the enemy grounds (usually somewhere in the middle) and is protected by a variety of defenses. Each champion has a unique ability that can be utilized in destroying the enemy’s nexus.

The 3 Game Maps within LoL

The main concept stays the same within LoL, but there are 3 game maps to choose from: Summoner’s Rift, Twisted Treeline and Howling Abyss. The most popular is Summoner’s Rift, but players love that there are several options to choose from and there is no chance of boredom when playing LoL.
