League of Legends - also referred to as LoL - has been gaining popularity for the past decade among gamers around the world. Here is why.

The Creation of League of Legends

Developed and published by Riot Games in 2009, LoL was originally inspired by the World of Warcraft gaming franchise, specifically World of Warcraft III. The two leaders of Riot Games, Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill, were roommates at the University of Southern California. Together in 2006 the pair opened Riot Games for business.

Developing LoL did not come to Beck and Merrill overnight. It took a great deal of planning and even partnership with a man named Steve Feak, the designer of the custom map (called Defense of the Ancients) found in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

After years of working with Feak, LoL was first announced to the public on October 7th, 2008 and was officially released after testing about a year later on October 27th, 2009. By the year 2016, LoL was estimated to have over 100 million active players each month.

It is not just fun to play, but also extremely competitive. There is even a League Championship Series that hosts 10 professional teams in each continent annually. In 2017 the LoL World Championship had a $4 million prize pool and 60 million viewers.

How the Game is Played

League of Legends follows a freemium model that is completely supported by microtransactions. First, players must purchase and in-game currency with real currency. All you need to do is go directly to the Riot Games website to purchase Riot Points, which can then be used to play the game.

Setting of League of Legends

LoL takes place in a fantasy world called Runeterra, and within Runeterra there are heroes and villains with tons of different backstories. The characters found within the game come from different countries found on Valoran, the main continent. Most of the conflicts between characters are due to political struggles between the countries of Valoran.

Plot of League of Legends

The players of LoL take the role of a “summoner” that controls how champions, heroes, and villains battle against one another. The goal of the battle is typically to destroy the enemy’s “nexus”; the nexus is often a structure that lies somewhere in the center of the enemy’s base camp. The nexus holds power that must be destroyed for your team to win.

Game Modes within LoL

Just like many video games, the players within LoL start off weak but accumulate strength as they accomplish tasks and acquire items that give them strength as well as other powers. There are currently 3 game modes within LoL: Summoner’s Rift, Twisted Treeline, and Howling Abyss. Summoner’s Rift is the most well known and popular among the 3, but the other 2 are just as entertaining and addictive.
