CSGO might not be as well-known as major sports like NBA basketball and NFL football, but it is starting to become a pretty big deal. CSGO - or Counter Strike: Global Offensive - is a part of the Electronic Sports League (ESL) that is quickly gaining traction among gamers around the world.

The History Behind ESL

The Electronic Sports League was founded in May 2015 in Germany and is now based in 2 continents. There are almost 30 teams spread throughout Europe and North America that virtually compete with one another for cash prizes. Counter Strike: Global Offensive is one of the most popular electronic games within the league.

CSGO: What Is It?

CSGO is a multiplayer first-person shooting video game pinning two teams against each other. One team is deemed the “Terrorists” and one is the “Counter-Terrorists.” The main objective of the game is to eliminate the other team entirely, but there are also other objectives involved throughout the mission.

Terrorists vs Counter-Terrorists

The Terrorists of CSGO act as most terrorists normally would; their main task in the game is to plant a bomb or defend the hostages that they have taken captive. The Counter-Terrorists, on the other hand, must do whatever it takes to prevent this from happening. They either have to obtain the bomb and diffuse it or rescue the hostages from harm.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive Gameplay

CSGO has a total of 9 unique game modes and each mode is distinct from the next. At the end of each mission, individual players are awarded for the tasks they have successfully achieved. They aren’t rewarded with points or recognition, but rather in-game currency that can be used to purchase weapons and ammo.

Weapons Available for Purchase

The in-game money that is earned is often spent within 4 categories - all of which are guns - but players can also buy utilities to improve their overall gameplay. You can purchase everything from rifles to sub-machine guns to heavy pistols to grenades. There is even a taser available for purchase with CSGO currency.

Game Modes of CSGO

The 9 game modes of CSGO are as follows:

Competitive

Casual

Deathmatch

Arms Race

Demolition

Wingman

Flying Scotsman

Danger Zone

Weapons Course

The most popular and widely used of these game modes is the Competitive mode. This gameplay model pits two players against each other from two opposing teams with 5 players each. A competitive match takes about 45 minutes to complete, which some players say is an optimal game time for completing a mission.

Development and Release of CSGO

CSGO is a sequel to the widely recognized video game Counter-Strike: Source. Both games were developed by Valve Corporation, but Hidden Path Entertainment also hopped on board to help with CSGO.

The sequel was released on August 21st, 2012 and immediately got positive reception from critics around the world. Of course there has been some negative criticism (as there always seems to be) about the gameplay features, but overall gamers seem to love what CSGO has to offer.
